At the heart of the service is a dedicated call handling system (call centre), designed especially for out of hours. UCC has its own IT infrastructure and has a high speed and secure N3 connection that allows for sophisticated data flows between UCC and the surgeries. Medical reports for all patients seen during the night are automatically electronically transmitted or faxed to respective patient GP surgeries each morning at 8am.
UCC uses a leading patient management system; Adastra to manage patient care. Adastra has recently been updated to integrate with the NHS National Spine for the Summary Care Record (SCR), which makes access to the SCR much quicker and easier for clinicians. The solution enables our out-of-hours clinicians to instantly access the SCR for patients from within the Adastra system, subject to confidentiality safeguards.
UCC has nine vehicles to enable clinicians to go on home visits. Each car is fitted with mobile telephones and toughbook laptops, allowing GP and drivers and base to be in contact with each other all the time. The cars are checked on a daily basis and regularly serviced. The drivers are responsible for checking the vehicles and mobile equipment at the start of each shift, managed by a dedicated dispatcher from within the call centre.
